Chris Malone

I have spent the last 18 years of my life in radio, from the Pacific coast to the waters of the Gulf of Mexico.  Originally from Lompoc, California, I now call Ocala home. I am happily married to the love of my life, Melissa, for 9 years.  Our family includes two sweet dogs.  Frasier, an 8 year old Border Collie mix and Savannah, a 2 year old Australian Shepherd.  Sadly, we said goodbye to our beloved Persian cat Sebastian this year, losing him to heart disease.  I love to cook, camp, lounge at the beach, cook, work on cars and listen to all sorts of music.

Ok, see if this personality test is accurate.  Today, I shared a survey conducted by Dr. Alan Hirsche, neurological director of the Chicago Smell and taste Treatment and Research Foundation.  It found links between job satisfaction, personality and favorite snack food:

·         Potato Chip chompers would get the greatest career thrill as lawyers, tennis pros, police officers or CEOs. These competitive individuals have high expectations for themselves and others.
·         Pretzel lovers should go for jobs as journalists, firefighters, flight attendants, veterinarians or pediatricians. These high-energy types are easily bored. They bite into a challenge and trust their intuition.
·         Tortilla Chip fans make excellent farmers, travel agents, chefs, clergy or news anchors. These perfectionists and humanitarians are always ready to help.
·         Cheese Curl consumers would find enjoyment as real estate agents, psychiatrists or producers. They're formal and proper with a great sense of integrity.
·         Popcorn poppers find fulfillment as artists, teachers, truck drivers, nurses, judges or neurosurgeons. They dive right in and take charge and are self-confident, not show-offs.
·         Nut nibblers should go for careers as plumbers, architects, sanitation workers, cardiologists or politicians. These individuals are easy-going, understanding and keep cool under pressure.
·         Cracker snackers should be stockbrokers or race car drivers. These types need a lot of privacy and are very logical and reasonable.

Are you ready for April????  I can remember my Grandma telling me that the older you get, the faster time flies. Like everythign else she told me, she was right!  This weekend I plan to continue my spring planting projects and painting the house (outside, much easier than inside).  I look at it as a great way to get my base tan established for the upcoming summer.
Have a great weekend and check back for more about the show.

OK, today marks the final week to get Uncle Sam your tax information.  I found these pointers that can make sure the IRS receives your forms in and on time:

·         Use the peel-off name and address label that come with your forms.
·         Double check all math calculations.
·         Sign and date your return both you and your spouse.
·         Attach supporting documentation, including W-2s and 1099s.
·         Enclose a signed, dated check if you owe taxes.
·         Check only one filling status.
·         Match everyone's name and Social Security number against the data on his or her Social Security card.
·         Use the correct tax tables in your filling instructions.
·         Affix correct postage.

Remember, even Al Capone couldn't escape the IRS!  Plus, if you want to receive your economic stimulus checks, set to go out in May, you will have to file your 2007 returns by April 15th.  Click here if you want all the information, as presented by the IRS.

From the Thursday (4.24.08) show

Ok, holding ym breath for Elton John tonight.  I do belive he will show up, healthy, for one great show!  Too bad for me that I can not attend the show tonight!! :( (although I could attend March 16th orginial date).  If you are attending tonight, let me know how the show pans out!

From the Friday (4.25.08) show

ELTON JOHN WAS PERFECT!  So I am told the Elton John concert was one of the best ever.  He apologized for missing the March date and said he would make it up.  According to many phone calls, he did!  Kudos to Elton John...I only wished I was there.

So today, I took part in 'Career Day' at Dunnellon Elementary.  This was a first for me.  Heading from my house in Ocala to Dunnellon I was wondering how the kids would react to my presentation.  Will I talk over their heads?  Do they really care about the guy they hear on the radio?  Since I do not work at the top hits station that the kids generally listen to, I could only hope they still saw radio as a pretty cool job.
I arrive at Dunnellon Elementary this morning around 7:30 and I was warmly received by the teachers and their assists at the parent drop-off circle.  Wearing my bright orange KTK shirt, they smiled and said 'KTK..WOW!'.  OK, two points for the adults, now how would the kids react?  I would soon find out.
We meet in the library, where the other Career Day presenters gather to get instructions from the Coordinator, Natalia Robledo.  As I review my notes for my presentation, I glance across the room to see my competition.  A fireman, a farmer, a nurse, a paramedic, two dentists, even a politician!  Cool jobs that kids most likely will scream in unison, 'COOL'.  Boy I was worried, but as the clock ticks closer to my first group, I reassure myself that I will do fine.
So I head with the others to my post.  The first group arrives and my mind goes blank!   Wait a minute!!!!!  I talk on the radio to thousands of people every day!!!!!  Speaking with twenty-five 4th  and 5th graders at a time should be easy as pie!  I take a breath and start my presentation, not knowing if I was making any sense to these bright young men and women.  I come to the end of my first presentation and ask if there are any questions!  Of course, little hands fly up in the air and to my amazement, they had really good questions!  SUCCESS!  I DID reach them, they ARE excited!!!
The rest of the day was easy and I so much enjoyed the children.  All of them bright, well-mannered and respectful.  My fear that 9, 10,11 and 12 year olds would not understand how radio is transmitted from the studio to the radio and what I do at the station was unjust.
My thanks to all the teaching and administrative staff at Dunnellon Elementary for inviting me.  I will be the first to sign up next year!

From the Monday (4.28.08) show

What a weekend!  Saturday was the Marion county March of Dimes March for Babies.  As we do every year, 98.5 KTK hosted a Spirit Station along the route, but in a new location.  We arrived Saturday morning to set up our tent next to the M&S Bank Spirit Station, who did a fantastic job.  There were 10 to 15 bank employees setting up their station.  They were all busy filling up cups of ice water to hand out to the hundreds of walkers soon to be passing our stop on the walk.  PepsiCo asked us to hand out samples of their new  SoBe 'Life Water' at the walk, which we agreed would be warmly received.  A few weeks ago, we went to pick up the water, 40 cases total for this event.  I orginally though we'd never hand all this water out.  Boy was I wrong!  As the first group of walkers arrived, we clapped and whistled encouragement at these stars.  They had donated their time and Saturday to the March of Dimes...truly the heroes in our community.  Some walkers politely declined our offer as they continued on the 7 mile walk.  I began to wonder if we had unloaded these 40 cases of water from the van only to re-load them after the event.  Just then, I gaze down the street to see a one large moving mass of people, hundreds of people heading our way!  Oh my, there were so many people, young and old, all coming down the hill and would soon be at our Spirit Station.  Frantically, I began to cut open the plastic shrink wrap over the cases of water, preparing to quench the thirst of these marchers.
Hands were sticking out asking to sample the new product from SoBe.  Many of the walkers decided to stop and talk with us, they all commented how good the Life Water tasted and how thankful they were for a refreshing drink on the long walk.
Many people were singing along with the radio, at the top of their lungs, smiling and even dancing. At one point, a little boy pulled away from Mama and settled in front of our radio. As KTK played Big Mountain's "Baby I Love Your Way", he began to dance and dance.  Even when Mom tried to poull him away, he wasn't finished!  Dancing with theStars....WATCH OUT!  Our Spirit Station neighbor, M&S Bank continued to hand out cups of ice water and cheer along the participants.  I was truly impressed with their dog watering station for all the dogs to get a drink while on the walk.
All in all, we had a wonderful time.  It was really cool to meet all of our fans and provide support to the March of Dimes walkers.  The staff of M&S bank and myself agreed that this year, there were more participants than before.  800 had pre-registered and that did not include those who came out Saturday on their own.  All I can say is that Marion county has a big heart and never leave a challenge unanswered.  I am glad to call it home.

Today's show I mentioned ways to improve the chances of getting your home sold in a tough market.  From Yahoo.com, it's 5 easy ways to sell your home faster:
  1. If you do only two things before showing your house, clean, and clean some more. People want to come into a space and visualize themselves living there, and if there are spills on the table, toys on the floor, and dog mess everywhere, people can't focus on the space.
  2. Accentuate the positive, camouflage the negative. If you have large windows or a great view, hang long, simple curtains to accentuate them. If you have spacious rooms, remove any too-bulky furniture or unnecessary pieces that would make the space feel cramped.
  3. Appeal to the widest possible audience. If you have a hot-pink accent wall, paint over it with a more neutral shade that matches the other walls. Pack away that collection of Star Wars figurines. Stash kids' toys or dog toys in another room.
  4. Create a welcoming environment. You want buyers to make an emotional connection to your home, replace dim light bulbs with new ones and make sure there is a pleasant, but not overpowering, smell in the house.
  5. Develop a quick-clean plan for last-minute showings. You never know when a realtor may have an interested client, so it's important to have a speedy cleaning plan for spontaneous appointments. Invest in a nice-looking storage trunk for stashing day-to-day clutter in a hurry.
